Krispy Kreme sales, profits rise
Revenue for Winston-Salem-based Krispy Kreme Doughnuts rose by 6.3 percent to $87.9 million in its fiscal second quarter, while net income rose to $2.2 million from a loss of $157,000 compared to a year ago. (KKD)

UNC suspends 13 football players for LSU game
Star linebackers Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant were cleared to play late Friday, but UNC-Chapel Hill will be without 13 players - most of them starters - as the team opens its season Saturday night under the shadow of NCAA investigations into players possibly accepting improper benefits from agents and possible academic fraud.
